Project Background Japan Railways (JR), in partnership with NOHARA Holdings, launched a forward-thinking initiative to modernize infrastructure management at the historic Mojiko Station in Kitakyushu, Japan. Recognizing the need for an integrated and intuitive facility management system, JR adopted SIM-ON to support daily operations, asset tracking, and long-term maintenance planning within this iconic transport hub.

Scope and Objectives Mojiko Station, a heritage-listed structure and active railway terminal, required a comprehensive solution to manage both modern mechanical systems and legacy infrastructure. The project team used Matterport digital twins of the station as the spatial foundation for deploying SIM-ON. Each system component—mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and IoT—was documented, linked, and monitored within the SIM-ON platform.

Use of SIM-ON SIM-ON provided a unified interface for asset management, preventive maintenance scheduling, and issue tracking. Facility staff could virtually navigate the station using a Matterport-based 3D walkthrough, instantly accessing data on specific assets such as escalators, lighting systems, or power panels. Maintenance events, warranties, manuals, and historical interventions were consolidated in a centralized repository.

Key Functions Utilized

  • IoT integration for real-time monitoring of temperature, energy use, and motion sensors
  • Asset Manager to assign maintenance cycles, link documentation, and track warranties
  • Task Manager & Timeline to plan and follow up on scheduled maintenance and inspections
  • Mobile access for technicians on-site to report issues or complete tasks via smartphones or tablets

Benefits

  • Centralized, visual control over complex infrastructure in a high-traffic public facility
  • Improved response times and task coordination for maintenance crews
  • Enhanced documentation quality for inspections and compliance
  • Long-term digital record for future renovation, upgrades, or disaster recovery planning

Strategic Outcome With SIM-ON, JR now manages Mojiko Station not just as a transportation node but as a digitally mapped facility—streamlining workflows, ensuring asset longevity, and improving service reliability for millions of travelers.

“SIM-ON has redefined how we maintain a station with both historical significance and modern complexity. Its visual and data-driven platform gives our teams clarity, efficiency, and confidence in every maintenance decision we make.” — Stephanie Bay, BIM Construction Manager, Nohara Group
